One of the things the company did was up the overall audible quality of the game by making the game's music redbook audio. Given that even the best looking PlayStation ever created wouldn't look as good as the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2, Ubi Soft realized that it had to do more than simply make sure that the game looked as good as possible on the venerable PS. While the game's not running in the PlayStation's high-resolution mode, the excellent use of quality textures and vertex colors gives off the impression that it is in high-res because it's so clean and sharp looking. This allowed them to give the characters and backgrounds more volume and also did wonders in making everything look extremely clean. One of the tricks that the developers used to help create these beautiful backgrounds and character models was the use of vertex colors. Rayman 2's bright and multi-colored 3D backgrounds are the first in a 3D game that rival those of its 2D hand drawn brethren. One of the reasons that many of the truly hardcore gamers haven't hopped on the 3D bandwagon is that most 3D games haven't really given off the same sense of beauty that you get with a colorful 2D game, such as the original Rayman for PlayStation and Sega Saturn. The quality of the textures on the characters and the 3D backgrounds are astonishing and help create some of the most vibrant and colorful gameplay environments ever imagined. In revamping the engine from scratch, one of the areas that the developers paid special attention to was the game's textures, and it shows. There aren't any noticeable transition segments in the characters' animation, as it flows smoothly from one movement to the next. The game moves at an ultra smooth 30 frames per second and the animation quality of Rayman, his friends, and his foes are of the utmost quality. While the game's graphic quality really isn't up to par with the Dreamcast or N64 versions, it's amazing that Ubi Soft was able to get it to look as close as it currently does on the PS. From a distance, the game was actually mistaken for the Dreamcast version, which has to be one of the most graphically impressive games ever created. The first thing one will notice about Rayman 2 for the PS is that it's one of the best looking games available on the system.

While most companies would simply just try and do their best to port over the original engine from the Nintendo 64 or Dreamcast, Ubi Soft's Shanghai development office has gone the extra mile and completely re-created the game's engine from scratch in an effort to fully optimize it for PlayStation. However, after checking out the game for the first time today, it became clear that Ubi Soft has one of the biggest surprises of the year up its sleeve. Hands-on Impressions After having seen Rayman 2 for Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast, it was very hard to get excited about a version of Rayman 2 for the technically inferior PlayStation.
